Today, my kindergarten and first grade reading groups, added the Martin Luther King poem for kids to their poetry journals, then completed the interactive pocket chart poem activity with their peers.
First, we worked with the printable Martin Luther King poem for kids. Both kindergarten and first grade reading groups first did a sight word hunt, and letter search- finding words and letters they already knew.
In kindergarten reading groups, we did an echo reading, followed by a shared reading. In first grade groups, we located rhyming words, did a shared reading, independent read aloud, and paired reading.
When done, we added the Martin Luther King poem to our poetry notebooks. You can get the printable poem, HERE.
Next, while I pulled kids for progress monitoring, the other kiddos went to the Build a Poem pocket chart center. When they get to the poetry station, the Dr. King poem is hanging at the top of the pocket chart, and the word cards are mixed up along the bottom.
The kids work together in small groups to build and read aloud the Martin Luther King poem.

Students are engaged, interacting with peers, reading, and learning the basic message of Martin Luther King, Jr. I couldn't have been happier with this Martin Luther King activities! Way to go, kiddos!
