How to Set up Write the Room

Write the Room, similar to task cards, is an excellent solution for your active learners! When implementing this interactive, leveled, writing center, you will watch your students become eager, yes eager, to write!

With leveled seasonal vocabulary cards and write the room recording sheets, differentiating is a breeze!  Let’s look at how to prepare, what’s included in, and ways to store, my Write the Room resources.

How to Prep Write the Room:

1. Choose which Write the Room level your students need.

Level 1: Students locate the vocabulary card around the room, find the matching picture on their write the room recording sheet, and copy the word into the box.

Level 2: Students look at the letter(s) on their recording sheet, and search for picture cards around the room that start with that beginning sound. Level 2 doesn't have words printed on the card.  Students have to use inventive spelling and phonemic awareness to write the word independently.

2. Hang the leveled vocabulary cards around the room at eye level.

3. Make copies of the recording sheet.
4. Put clipboards and writing utensils at a designated area.

5. Review the pictures with the students, and model how to complete the Write the Room activity.

6. Watch as your students suddenly become eager writers - writing words all around the room.

What is Included with Write the Room:

Level 1 includes a silver center sign with kid-friendly instructions, picture cards WITH words, and a write the room recording sheet with matching pictures.

This builds concepts of print, letter formation, vocabulary, and transferring information from print to paper.

Level 2 includes a red center sign with instructions, cards with PICTURES ONLY, and recording sheet with letters that resemble the beginning sounds of the picture cards. Students, at this level, walk around the room looking for pictures that start with the same sound as the letter on their sheet, and use inventive spelling to write the words.

This level builds concepts of print, letter formation, and independent writing using initial, middle, and ending sounds.

How to Organize Write the Room

You can store and organize your Write the Room themed writing centers in these beautiful Iris Containers.

For example, I keep the Back to School leveled cards in the pink container, Fall picture cards in the red container, and so forth.  Then, I keep all of the recording sheets in a Write the Room hanging file folder.  Yes, in case you're wondering, I've been using these Iris containers for all of my themed center storage.  Slight obsession - I take full responsibility!

In my Holiday Write the Room Bundle, you can get centers for the entire school year.
