How to play I Have Who Has

I Have, Who Has has become my students favorite review game!  From sight words, letters and sounds, colors and shapes, numbers and tens frames, to cvc words and addition and subtraction, my I Have Who Has games are great for kindergarten, first grade, and second grade.

I Have Who Has is an excellent game to review reading, writing, and math skills.
I Have Who Has can be played as a whole class or in a small group.  Read on to learn how to play I Have Who Has.

After choosing which skill you want to work on, simply print and cut the I Have Who Has cards.  Ask a parent volunteer to laminate the cards if you'd like them to last for the school year.  Once you purchase the pdf, you can reprint any cards that need replaced.

Playing I Have Who Has as a Whole Class
* Have students sit or stand in a circle around the classroom.

* For the I Have Who Has game to work correctly, be sure to pass out ALL cards.   Depending on class size, some students may have 2 cards.  This is a great opportunity to differentiate!  Give the students a card that you know he/she will be able to read.

    * Whomever has the card that reads “I have the first card”, will go first.  After the student reads aloud the card, the student who has the word called aloud will read next.

(ex:)  Student 1:  I have the first card.  Who has all?”
Student 2:  I have all.  Who has are?”

   * While calling out the I Have Who Has cards, there are several ways you could manage the group.  For example, they can sit in a circle, stay seated, and simply read aloud their cards. Or, you could have them sit/stand when it's their turn.  If doing a sequencing game (alphabet or numbers), you could have them go stand in a line when it's their turn.  This is a good method to reinforce your visual learners :).

Playing I Have Who Has as a Small Group

As a reading tutor, I love playing I Have Who Has in a small group.  You can use the games in an intervention reading group, or leave it at a literacy station.

Pictured below are my I Have Who Has CVC set (with pictures).

When playing I Have Who Has in a small group, you will distribute the  cards to each player until there are no cards remaining.  They will have nearly an equal amount of cards.

* I then have the students lay their cards out flat in front of them, assuring they can see all of their cards.  Holding them in their hands takes too much time when searching for the word/number called out.
* Give your students an opportunity to look over all of their words.  This is a great time to ask them if they need help reading any of their words before getting started.

   * Collect I Have Who Has game cards when finished, or have a student helper be the collector during the game.  He/she can collect the cards from the kids as they are called out.

  * To keep them organized, keep each of your I Have Who Has games in a zip-loc baggy, or in small storage containers.  I absolutely love using these Iris Containers to store my I Have Who Has games.
