Planting Flowers

Thumbs up Thursday...look what we did today! We planted flowers!! My awesome coworker was able to get a donation of flowers and soil for every kindergartner to plant their own flower. With Mother's Day just around the corner, these will make beautiful gifts :-)

We read A Tiny Seed by Eric Carle, "examined and observed" the parts of the flower, planted them in a cup of soil, then completed a journal entry to record the process. So much fun!

Investigating parts of a flower

Once the students had the hands-on experience of planting flowers, they began looking back through the books about plants and flowers.  I also noticed they were drawing pictures of flowers on the back of their work.  I knew they were ready for centers!

They worked on Building Sentences about Flowers and Plants at the word work center.

These vocabulary cards were the perfect addition to the writing center.  We also used them for pocket chart activities.
